The "Do's and Don'ts" of Social Media

In this generation, almost everyone uses social media. If you think you don’t, think again. Social Media consists of applications such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, Email along with so many other platforms. As with most things in life, there are do’s and don’ts of social media. Some are specific to certain platforms, but most are a generalization of how to get the best results out of your social media experience.

Something you will encounter on any social media platform is feedback. Whether you are making a post on Twitter, uploading a video to YouTube, or sending an Email, you will most likely receive some sort of reaction. That reaction can be positive or negative and it is important to respond to that feedback appropriately. It is best to stay positive regardless of the nature of the response, remembering to be aware of the context in which a response was made. However, if a negative reaction comes from a post you made there are several more steps that can be taken. For example, you can “agree to disagree”, meaning there is no point in arguing with someone who is just looking for a fight. Another example is the good ole “delete, block and report”, which is pretty much self-explanatory. There is no obligation to argue with someone who wants to react negatively with your posts or interactions on social medias.

To even receive reactions, you must engage in your social medias. Understanding how use hashtags on Twitter and Instagram to attract attention is important when reaching out to a specific crowd. Along with hashtags, it is helpful to tag people in posts to get attention. Tagging people or profiles varies on different social platforms, therefore it is beneficial to get familiar with those features on whatever social media you choose to partake in. Another way to attract attention is to pin posts and add links to get other users actively engaging in your posts.

It is important unique and genuine rather than desperate and fake when attempting to attract followers. In addition, it helps to share good content that users can associate with your personal account and use several different platforms. Get in on all kinds of social medias and link your accounts. When someone is scrolling through a feed and notices a post or share by you that interests them, they may be likely to view your profile and follow your different platforms if you connect them. This means it is important to make your profiles personalized to you to give potential followers a quick understanding of you.

Don’t expect to become famous overnight and do not focus on how many followers you have 24/7. Do react well to feedback, attract attention to your posts and profile using the correct tools and be on various platforms as a genuine person. These are a few tips and tricks to help you get a boost in the social media world that keeps growing!
