It's All a Bunch of Hocus Pocus

This week marks the best week of the year for anyone involved in Ohio Norther University Greek life. It’s Greek week! An overall theme is picked for Greek week and fraternities and sororities pick individual themes that resonate with the overall theme. The overall theme this year is Disney and my sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, has chosen Hocus Pocus has our individual theme. Other individual themes this year consist of The Lion King, Kim Possible, Snow White, etc. Greek week is a crazy time where all fraternities and sororities compete against each other in several events as well as staying humble and supportive. Greek week is crazy with loud chants and cheers in attempt to be the most spirited chapter and by the end of the week an award is given to the most spirited and best sportsmanship.

Monday kicks the week off with one of the most competitive events: Greek sing. Each sorority and fraternity put together a ten-minute performance that involves dancing and singing. The songs are usually popular songs that are cut short and words are changed to support Greek life. There is a panel of judges that will then pick a winner for the fraternities and a winner for the sororities along with the best “Greek God/Goddess.”

Zeta Tau Alpha’s performance consists of six dances that all correlate with Hocus Pocus. We use voice overs from scenes in the movie as our transitions to help tell our story. Our story puts a twist on the movie. The three witches in the movie attempt to steal the lives of children for their own, but in our performance, we display the witches trying to take Greek life away from the “children.” There are dances with all children, all witches and battles between the two groups. In the end, the children defeat the witches and take Greek life back. I was in four dances as a child, which was several more than previous years. It took more focus and patience, but it was rewarding to be a part of it.

ZTA brought home the win in Greek sing for the second year in a row and got runner up for best Greek Goddess. Greek sing is by far my favorite event, but I also am looking forward to the rest of the events this week and especially for Greek Olympics on Saturday! Stay posted for a blog next week on the final results of Greek week 2018.

  1. I loved Zeta's Greek Sing performance!!! I am good friends with Darby and Hallie who played "leads" in your routine and I was so happy to cheer them on along with the rest of you. I was thrilled when I heard you were doing Hocus Pocus and that Darby was the main witch because I know it is her dream! Then seeing her perform it I felt like a proud mom; it was better than I could even imagine.
